The motorist who died when his car crashed on a key residential road in Scotby was a man in his 70s, police have confirmed.
The man, whose name has not yet been released by police, was at the wheel of a Ford Focus car which is believed to have crashed into the side of a house.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The tragedy happened on Park Road, Scotby, at around 5.20pm on Friday.
The road was closed to traffic for around four hours as police forensic accident investigators hunted for clues to why the accident happened.
A fire crew from Carlisle's west station was originally called to the scene, but their services were not needed.
A Cumbria Police spokesman said on the night: "Officers were called at 5.25pm to a single vehicle RTC on Park Road.
"Sadly, at the scene the driver was found to be deceased."
In a statement issued later, Cumbria Police added: "Anyone who witnessed the silver Ford Focus leave the road is asked to contact PC 1569 of Cumbria Mobile Support Group, calling 101 and quoting log reference number 159 of January 26."
