Everton have added £5,000 to a charity fundraising campaign set up by their fans to help flood-hit Carlisle United.

The Everton Fans' Forum has already raised about £1,200 for the Blues through a JustGiving page.

And the Premier League club - Carlisle's FA Cup opponents this Sunday - have themselves now contributed to the campaign.

United plan to share the proceeds between their three charities.

The club's community sports trust, who lost equipment and facilities in the Storm Desmond floods, will receive a share of the cash.

United's charity partners, Carlisle Key and Hospice at Home, will also benefit.

Carlisle media officer Andy Hall said: "This gesture is another example of how much the football family comes together at a time of adversity.

"I'd like to thank the Evertonians on behalf of the community of Carlisle for doing this for us, and for helping three fantastic charities."

The independent supporters' group have set an initial £7,500 target, saying they wanted to help the Blues after reading about the estimated £3million cost of repairing Brunton Park.

Fans' forum chair Nick Mernock said: "We are reaching out to Evertonians to make whatever donation they can - the price of an extra pint or cup of coffee will contribute to make a difference and to help Carlisle United and the local community with their recovery efforts."

Everton's senior press and PR manager Mo Maghazachi told the News & Star: "Ultimately Carlisle themselves are a beacon for their community, just as Everton are to ours. When you are hit hard by such events, you soon realise how these beacons stand out.

"This is a great gesture from our supporters and Everton are only too happy to contribute towards it."

Sunday's tie, meanwhile, continues to head towards a sell-out crowd with fewer than 1,000 terrace tickets remaining.

Carlisle have so far sold 15,644 tickets. United's capacity, including press and hospitality seats, is 17,392 - which would be their biggest home crowd since 1989.

Premier League ref Lee Mason will be in charge of Sunday's game.
