Appleby Horse Fair 2017 will be biggest in Europe
APPLEBY Horse Fair, the biggest event of its kind in Europe, will return to Cumbria in June.
A year of planning has gone in to delivering one of the biggest events in Cumbria's calendar - which takes place from Thursday June 8 to Wednesday 14.
The main days of the festival will once again be the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the days either side mostly dedicated to setting up and winding down.
The traditional gypsy and traveller gathering swells the population of the Eden town each year, with public agencies linking up so it goes smoothly.
Thousands will attend the fair - and organisers have urged visitors to do their bit to make sure there are no problems.
People attending the event can expect to see the traditional activities of travellers conducting horse sales and horses being washed in the river, as well as pulling painted caravans and wagons.
Gypsy and traveller Billy Welch, a member of the Multi Agency Co-ordinating Group, which works to make the Fair safer each year, said: "Gypsies and travellers have responded really well to our appeals over the past few years not to arrive too early for Appleby Fair with their trailers. People planning their journeys to Appleby using the temporary stopping places provided make a real difference to the impact the Fair has on local communities.
“So if you are bringing your trailer to Appleby please respect the Fair, plan your journey carefully using the information about stopping places available at www.applebyfair.org, so you don’t arrive too early before the Fair starts on 8 June. By doing this you not only help improve road safety, but allow more space on road side verges for grazing and bowtops.”
