Ex-Haven flyer Finch set for Barrow debut

BARROW are set to unleash ex-Whitehaven flyer Liam Finch on visitors Workington Town tomorrow following his premature return to Craven Park (3pm).
The stand-off rejoined the Raiders last month after failing to settle at Haven, where he scored three tries in seven matches. And boss Dave Clark, who has named Finch in an 18-man squad, reckons he may now be ready to step up to first-team level, following a couple of appearances for the reserves.
“We’ve been getting him used to our game plan, before putting him in. He’s getting to know his role, and how we play differently from Whitehaven,” Clark said. “His experience will bring a lot to the side, having played at a higher level. I’m sure when he gets his opportunity he will take it on.”
Finch scored 13 tries in 29 matches for Barrow last term, before joining Haven in the close-season.
Barrow prop Brett McDermott will miss the clash with his former club due to a troublesome neck injury.
“Brett’s had the injury for three or four weeks and it’s getting worse,” added Clark. “He would love to have played in this game.
“He gives 100% and doesn’t like to miss out, but his health comes first. He’s had it X-rayed and they haven’t come up with a fracture, but there’s a lot of movement, so it’s maybe a trapped nerve. An MRI scan’s been suggested and that’s the next step.”
Barrow beat Town 26-10 at Derwent Park in the league opener in March, though Clark reckons Dave Rotheram’s side are now a tougher proposition, with Jay Duffy and Carl Forber calling the shots.
“Those two go to the line and ask questions of defences, and Tunstall, Burgess and Lavulavu all go forward well,” said the coach, who is targeting promotion this year.
