Workington Town will go in to Saturday’s derby clash with unbeaten title-chasing Barrow at Craven Park as underdogs – and that suits Aussie import Chris Young fine.
The big forward, who made his home first-team debut in last weekend’s 30-20 defeat against Swinton, reckons it could play in to Town’s hands.
“They might expect to beat us by 50 points, and we might come under the radar and knock them off,” he said. “I have seen it happen before. If it happened, it would put confidence in to the side.”
Dave Rotheram’s men have won only one of their opening six NL2 matches and Young is waiting for the team to translate their form on the training ground in to a match situation.
“Dave’s a good coach and training is sharp, it’s just that it’s not coming out on the field at the moment,” added Young, who believes his match fitness it starting to return following his switch from Down Under.
“I’ve had three games now, and Sunday was the biggest in terms of minutes. So hopefully I’ll be ready for Barrow and I’ll be there with everyone else.
“I got about 60 minutes, which will have helped get my match fitness up.
“My workrate is probably 70% of what I’m used to doing. I’m used to more hit-ups and tackles, but I’m getting there.”
In his short time at Town, he has already been impressed by forwards Dean Burgess and Matthew Tunstall, and winger Stephen Dawes.
“Dean Burgess is playing well and working really good,” he said. “Tutty runs hard and I rate Dawesy on the wing.”
Barrow have won all four of their League Two outings and took Gateshead’s unbeaten record with a 27-22 win on Tyneside at the weekend.
