Old hands top Edmo’s summer shopping list

DARREN Edmondson has a couple of old hands at the top of his summer shopping list for Workington Reds.
The Reds manager, who saw his team round off the season with an impressive 1-1 draw at Harrogate on Saturday, reckons the team would benefit from more experience next term.
“Ideally we would like a couple of experienced players in,” he said. “We are talking to people, but if they come to us, it won’t be for financial reasons.
“They will come to play football, or because they want to help me and Viv. Some players coming to the end of their careers like to pass on their experience to younger players. I was like that myself.
“We’ll have a small budget and will be careful with the money we spend. It’s a friendly squad and we’ll also have to look at the temperament of players we bring in.”
Reds’ main hurdle in attracting talent remains geography, with many players from the North-East and Lancashire having options on their doorsteps.
No 2 Viv Busby said: “Matty Berkeley travels from Manchester, but not many will do that.
“We have a little shortlist of players and we’ll monitor it over the next few weeks. Our players need to see we are trying to add to the squad because they want to be successful.”
Busby has been impressed with Edmondson in his first year in charge at Borough Park.
“He’s coped with it well,” Busby added. “He’s good on the game and sees things during the 90 minutes.
“He’s got good banter with the players and they respect him for the way he conducts himself.
“But you are only as good as what’s on the field.”
