Let’s make Derwent Park a fortress

BOSS Dave Rotheram has set Workington Town an ambitious target ahead of tomorrow’s return to NL2 action against visitors Swinton: Don’t lose another home game all season.

Massive problems: Town coach Dave Rotheram

Town were beaten at Derwent Park last weekend by Super League Hull KR, in a Challenge Cup clash, and Rotheram, below, does not want to taste another defeat during the campaign.

“I want to make Derwent Park a fortress, so people fear coming up here,” he said, recalling Town’s 13-month unbeaten home run under former boss Ged Stokes.

“I want to get back to those days, which some of the players here now will remember.

“We need to have pride in the place, and say, no one is going to come here and take points away.

“We are perceived to have a small pitch, but it’s what happens on it that counts.”

New Aussie signing Chris Young returns to the line-up tomorrow (3pm), while fellow forward Ryan Campbell is promoted to a starting role after impressing Rotheram against Rovers.

“Some of the boys played extremely well against Hull KR, the best I’ve seen them play, including Ryan, Dean Burgess and Jason Mossop,” added the coach.

Winger Martyn Wilson has failed to recover from his ankle problem, while Robert Lunt could join his brother Shaun on the sidelines, also with a back injury.

If he misses out, Scott Burgess will slot in at hooker. Taani Lavulavu will return after recovering from his groin injury.

Town could move in to play-off contention with a win tomorrow, and leap-frog the Lions.

“Swinton are a big side, with a very quick back-line,” Rotheram added. “The certainly asked some questions when losing to Oldham in the cup last week, and scored two very nice tries.”
