WORKINGTON Reds’ supporters’ club handed over more than £27,000 to the Borough Park outfit in the year to July 2007 after another huge fund-raising effort.
The sum was revealed following the supporters’ AGM by chairman Alec Graham, who was delighted with his group’s help.
“It’s an excellent effort once again,” he said. “I remember going to Braintree for the FA Trophy game, and their supporters’ club was presenting a big cheque to the club for £2,000.
“It puts in to perspective, with a small number of active members, what great work our supporters’ club does.
“It’s the largest single amount of income from fund-raising that the club gets, so it is critical.”
The fans’ group, with around a dozen active members, raised just over £29,000 during the year to July last year, with almost seven grand coming from the monthly draw, and nearly six from the half-time draw.
Sponsored bike rides by committed fans, including one from local journalist Gordon Brown, who has been ill of late, were also good fund-raisers.
“Gordon’s a tremendous character and I would like to wish him well from the club,” added Graham.
The supporters’ club also contributed £500 to help pay for private surgery for young defender Alan Inglis.
Graham rates Reds’ league form as patchy but has enjoyed the club’s best FA Cup run for 25 years and its FA Trophy success.
“If it was said at the start of the season that we would finish mid-table and have a good cup run, I would have taken it,” he added.
Reds travel to Harrogate on Saturday for their final league game of the campaign.
