WORKINGTON Town could be spoiled for choice when they tackle Swinton Lions on Sunday with up to FIVE players who missed last weekend’s Challenge Cup test against Hull KR coming in to contention.
Coach Dave Rotheram hopes Aussie Chris Young, who was cup tied, and injured quartet Shaun Lunt, Jamie Beaumont, Taani Lavulavu and Martyn Wilson will all be available for Town’s return to NL2 action.
And Rotheram reckons Town will be geared up for the Lions after their high-octane meeting with Super League Rovers.
“It was a good tough workout against Hull KR, and the game was played at a speed our lads are not used to,” the coach said.
“That will benefit them this week, when obviously it’s going to be slower. They will have learned something.”
Iain Marsh (rib cartilage) and Mark Routledge (ankle) both picked up injuries against Hull KR in the 68-12 reverse, and they will be assessed this week.
Meanwhile, chairman Dave Bowden has publicly thanked Rovers for handing Town their share of gate receipts from the fourth round tie.
The visitors opted to forgo their four-figure half-share of the cash from receipts, after expenses.
“It was the ultimate sporting gesture,” said Bowden. “I can’t speak highly enough of Hull KR and their supporters. A lot of their supporters were chanting the name of our team in appreciation of the effort our lads put in.
“We had a pretty good relationship with the club in the build-up to the game, and obviously they new about the damage our stadium had suffered in a fire on Saturday.
“They were a National League club until 2006 and haven’t forgotten their roots.”
