I’m not quitting pledges Hewson

DAVE Hewson is not set to quit, and is already planning to be back with Workington Reds for the Blue Square North kick-off in August.
Both Hewson and his manager Darren Edmondson had been unhappy at internet suggestions he had suffered one injury too many and was ready to retire.
Hewson, at Borough Park last night, to watch his team-mates wind-up the home campaign with a 1-0 win over Worcester is aiming for a rigorous pre-season programme.
“I have damaged ligaments in my left ankle after a collision in the match with Burscough last week. It was one of those things that can happen in a tackle and wasn’t anybody’s fault.
“That’s not the ankle that has caused me problems in the past. I broke the right one against Carlisle United in a pre-season game two years ago and also damaged the ligaments in that ankle at Bury this season.
“I think I have been unlucky with injuries but it’s never made me consider finishing with the game,” he said.
Hewson also revealed that he had taken a call from former Reds’ assistant boss Tony Elliott after he’d heard he was considering quitting.
“Tony told me that I had been unlucky in my career but that might be it as far as injuries were concerned. That’s the way I’m looking at it.
“I thought it was good of him to ring and I’ve taken a lot of heart from what he said. “I think the summer goes quickly so hopefully it won’t be long before we’re training again for the new season and I’m just itching to be back at Workington,” he said.
Anthony Wright, who has also missed quite a bit of the season through injury, was brought off after 22 minutes last night as a precaution.
He suffered a fracture to his foot earlier in the campaign and was struggling against Worcester on the hard ground.
“There’s no point in taking any risks at this stage of the season and we want both Dabber and Anthony fit and firing for the start of next season,” said Edmondson.
