Northside Stars close in on British Under-15 champion

NORTHSIDE Stars could include the reigning British Under-15’s champion Daniel Greenwood in Academy League speedway this year.

Greenwood, who won the title at Northside last year, was back at the west Cumbrian training track on Saturday and discussing plans for next season.

Judith Lomas, who was in charge of the Moss Bay Metals-sponsored Stars last year, is planning ahead for the 2008 campaign.

“Obviously we want to bring through local lads but Daniel would be a good addition to the squad.

“He’s from the south and his local track is Rye House, where he will ride for them in the Academy. But you are allowed to ride in two separate sections of the Academy so he could ride for us as well.

“What he’s saying is that if Northside is running a training session in the afternoon he would come up for some practice and then ride for us if we’ve a meeting at night,” she says.

Another youngster from outside Cumbria who has caught the eye at Northside is Manchester-based Jason Garrity, currently recovering from an appendix operation.

He has already impressed numerous seasoned speedway riders and caught the imagination of the Workington fans when he was given second-half outings at Derwent Park.

He’s old enough to ride in the Academy this coming season and will be encouraged to develop his talents with the Stars having been a regular at the Northside training track.

Last season Northside Stars were the only team to complete all 12 fixtures in their section of the Academy. We didn’t do very well but that wasn’t the point. It’s a learning curve and hopefully all the riders will have gained valuable experience.

n A combined presentation night for the Northside Stars and the Training Track will be held at the Waverley Hotel in Workington on Saturday, February 2 after a training session. Tickets will be £6 and includes a disco and buffet.
