SKIPPER Graham Anthony will miss Workington Reds’ clash with visitors Worcester tonight and the final game of the season at Harrogate on Saturday after picking up his 10th yellow card of the campaign.
Boss Darren Edmondson will move Craig Johnston in to centre midfield to cover for Anthony tonight (7.45pm), against mid-table rivals City.
“I’m quite happy he misses these two games, rather than carry them over to the start of next season,” Edmondson said. “It’s just the way it has worked out.
“We left Craig Johnston out of the starting line-up at Kettering on Saturday, so he would be fresh for tonight.”
Edmondson was a non-playing sub in the 3-1 defeat at Rockingham Road, and is likely to name himself on the bench again tonight.
He is loath to consider starting with youngsters from the reserves, as they faced Fleetwood last night.
“It was a big game for them, so it would have been wrong to take two or three out of that team,” he added.
“We’ll go with what we’ve got and maybe put a couple of the young lads on the bench. The manager may have to put on the No 16 again, to make up the numbers.”
Neither Reds nor Worcester can be relegated or make the play-offs, though Edmondson is looking for a big final home performance of the campaign for Borough Park supporters.
He said: “The fans have had some tough times this season, and we want to send them home with smiles on their faces. We want a result for them.”
High-flying Kettering were presented with their championship trophy after Saturday’s victory over Reds, and Edmondson felt the title winners were on top of their game.
“The crowd made a bit of noise and Kettering were on top of us for 25 minutes,” he added. “We didn’t get playing and lacked a little confidence.”
Worcester returned to winning ways with a 1-0 success at Leigh RMI on Saturday. They had gone without a Blue Square North victory since beating Burscough on March 1, a run of six games that included four defeats.
n Workington reserves suffered their first defeat in the Lancashire League’s Western Division – leaving it all to play for in the race for the title.
Fleetwood gave themselves a championship life-line when they beat the Reds’ second string 3-0 last night at the Highbury Stadium.
The two sides are locked together on 47 points, each with two games left but they still have to meet again at Borough Park.
Fleetwood, who are in the running for the Unibond Premier League title, fielded a strong side and won well with goals from Lenny Reed, Jamie Wright and Danny Gillett.
