REDS Reserves are in good shape for tonight’s Lancashire League showdown at Fleetwood after a good win at Borough Park on Friday night.
The unbeaten west Cumbrians had to work hard to beat Leigh RMI 3-1 while Fleetwood were berating Bamber Bridge 4-0.
Reds have a three point advantage over their rivals, who also still have to come to Borough Park.
Dan Carmichael put Reds in front after 12 minutes and it stayed that way until the 58th minute when Leigh RMI equalised.
The visitors had more than matched their hosts and it was looking like one of Reds toughest tests until they took charge in the closing quarter.
Ross Johnston climbed above the Leigh defence to power home a header which restored the Reds lead and then both Dan Rayson and Carmichael had chances late on to extend the advantage.
The third goal came in injury time when the Leigh RMI keeper made a good save but David Renyard was on hand to steer home the rebound.
- A former Workington player from the 1950’s, who played 101 Football League and FA Cup games for the Reds has died at the age of 74.
Tom ‘Tucker’ Finley, who was from Frizington, joined the Reds in 1955 from the Northside junior club and was a wing-half who operated mainly alongside Tommy Kinloch, Denis Stokoe or Keith Burkinshaw.
He left the Reds in the 1959/60 season and for a short time played at Southport before returning to his native west Cumbria.
n Dave Heslop hailed his "brilliant" Penrith Town players after they clinched promotion to Northern One by beating Crook Town 3-1 at the World Group Stadium.
Striker Ryan Errington struck two and 24-goal top scorer Barry Irving hit the other to send Heslop's side up for the first time in five years.
They went up as Northern Two champions on that occasion and now need just one more win from their remaining three league games to secure a jubilant repeat.
Heslop said: "The lads deserve it for all the commitment and effort they've shown throughout the season. They've been absolutely brilliant.
"There will be a few celebrations, they deserve a drink or two, but I'm sure they won't go too overboard because we want to win the league at North Shields on Tuesday night."
