Town to honour heroes from Wembley triumph

WORKINGTON Town legend Harry Archer is looking forward to going down memory lane with old team-mates on Challenge Cup day at Derwent Park tomorrow – 50 years after he featured for the club in a Wembley final.

The former stand-off, third on Town’s all-time appearance list with 387 over 14 years from 1953, is one of six Workington stars from the Wembley showpiece to accept an invitation as special guests at the club’s fourth round clash with Hull KR (3.30pm).

He will meet up with Sol Roper, his old half-back partner, Bert Eden, John O’Neill, Benny Eve and Eric Stephenson, with who he shared the Twin Towers experience on May 10, 1958.

“It will be nice to have a day out at the rugby match, and to see some old friends, a few lads who played in that Wembley final,” said Seaton-based Harry.

Harry, now in his 70s, will not be able to relive old memories of Town’s 13-9 Wembley defeat by Wigan, however, as he was knocked senseless by a Mick Sullivan high tackle in the first-half, and recalls little of the occasion.

“There are no hard feelings about that,” he added. “It was just part of the game. I couldn’t come off as there were no substitutes in those days. You were pushed back on.

“I can’t remember much until we got back to the hotel that night.”

Harry would love to see a Town win tomorrow but reckons the Super League Robins will prove too strong.

“There’s a big difference between Super League and a Second Division team,” he added.

“Workington need local lads to play for them. That’s the key now. There are plenty there, they’ve always had the ability. It just seems to have dried up over the last few years.

“But the thing about Cumberland lads is that their hearts are in the right place.”

Young mascots from local amateur clubs will walk out with the teams tomorrow.
