Meeting at The City led to happy marriage

Romance blossomed at The City for George and Evelyn (Lyn) McKie of Church Street, Carlisle who have some very special memories.

Lyn told Timeline: “I met my (now) husband when we were demobbed from the Army and WAAFS after the war.

“We spent many winters nights in freezing rain, queuing in Ferguson Lane, hoping to get into The City.

“We dreaded having to wait at the head of the queue, because the wind used to blow right up Bank Street.

“When our turn came, we had to wait for our tickets until Amy (on the pay desk) finished filing her nails – she was an unusual character!

“If we were lucky enough to get one, we’d share a box of chocolates. One particular Saturday (September 25, 1948) to be exact, I met George in town at lunchtime. He proposed, I accepted, and we went to Potters’ jewellers to get the ring.

“We went back to The City for something to eat. He put the ring on my finger – we were engaged!

“When we came out, we said cheerio and he went off to play football!

“It will be our 59th anniversary in August and we share many happy memories.”
