WORKINGTON Reds last night made their first summer capture by snapping up prolific Penrith hitman Michael Reed.

And boss Tommy Cassidy is hoping the 22-year-old striker, who used to be a Carlisle United trainee, follows the same path as Anthony Wright after his successful move from the Northern League outfit.

“I’m confident he can score goals at the higher level,” said Cassidy. “Sometimes players just have the knack, and I think he’s one of them.

“Anthony Wright has done well for me, and I hope this lad can do the same. Michael played once for me a couple of years ago and did quite well.

“He decided not to stay, and that was fine. But I have seen him a couple of times since, and he can score goals.”

UniBond Premier Division Gateshead tracked Carlisle-based Reed early last season but he wanted to stay at Penrith and they eventually signed Reds forward Neil Tarrant, who had disappointed at Borough Park.

In April, Reed equalled Penrith’s post-war club scoring record of 27 league strikes in a season, set by Albert Clapperton in 1966/67.

Reed ended the campaign with 27 league goals in 27 matches, plus another five in cup competitions.

Cassidy is still in the market for another striker and a midfielder, though he is prepared to be patient until the right man becomes available.

“Everyone is looking for that 6ft 2 striker who is good in the air,” added the manager. Wright, Craig Johnston and Tony Hopper are the latest Reds aces to agree to return next term.
