Snooker

The latest snooker pro-am event from the Portland Club in Carlisle saw ex main tour professional Gary Wilson (Newcastle) take the top prize with a 3-0 win over Scottish junior international Axl Menlove (Dumfries).

Wilson opened up in the final with a frame winning break of 80. He quickly followed this up in the next with a 56, which, barring a careless miss on a red, could have set up a glorious opportunity for a maximum break. The final frame was very scrappy but a nervous Menlove failed to take his chances and was eventually defeated.

In the semi finals, Menlove defeated travel partner Stephen Kirkpatrick 3-2 in a scrappy tactical encounter. On the other side of the draw, Wilson defeated the in-form Neil Harrison (Carlisle) 3-0, aided by breaks of 67 and 91.

Harrison had reached this stage of the competition having produced three century breaks, first a 101 after losing the first frame to Ryan Ismay (Maryport), which was followed up with an 81, then breaks of 40, 100 and a 116 clearance saw off the challenge of Peterborough’s Stephen Charters.

Results: Last 16: Paul Jamison bt Robert Sim 3-1, Gary Wilson bt Paul Corbishley 3-0, Neil Harrison bt Ryan Ismay 3-1, Stephen Charters bt Mally Lancaster 3-2, James Silverwood bt Vince peet 3-1, Axl Menlove bt John Thwaite 3-1, John Airey bt Andrew Austin 3-0, Stephen Kirkpatrick bt Jim Butters 3.1.

Quarter-finals: G.Wilson bt P.Jamison 3-1, N.Harrison bt S.Charters 3-0, A.Menlove bt J.Silverwood 3-2, S.Kirkpatrick bt J.Airey 3-2.

Semi-finals: G.Wilson bt N.Harrison 3-0, A.Menlove bt S.Kirkpatrick 3-2.

Final: G.Wilson bt A.Menlove 3-0.

Ladies’ hockey

Wigton Ladies 1sts 4 Rotherham Ladies 1

AFTER a very disappointing performance last week Wigton were keen to get back to winning ways with an excellent team performance.

Wigton started the game brightly and were working really well. Wigton’s passing was much improved as they were playing quick first time balls to sticks, which was extremely effective as Rotherham couldn’t get near the ball.

Wigton were very successful down both wings, which created many goal-scoring opportunities.

All of Wigton’s great play was rewarded by Kath Sherlock’s fantastic shot, which rocketed into the top corner, leaving the Rotherham goalkeeper helpless.

Wigton seamed to relax and Rotherham started to see more of the ball, resulting in them creating more chances.

Rotherham did take one of their chances and equalised not long after Wigton had taken the lead. However, Wigton fought back and began to regain their domination from the opening minutes of the match.

Rotherham couldn’t handle the pressure that Wigton were putting on them and they eventually gave away a penalty corner, which turned out to be very costly. Rebecca Weston set Kath Sherlock up for her second of the match, giving Wigton a slight 2-1 advantage going into half time.

Wigton came out strong in the second half and were determined to ensure that they finished the match with nothing less than a win. After great play down the right from Emma Hill and Megan Cook, Sheila Monkhouse played a brilliant ball into Kath Sherlock, who beat the keeper to round off her hattrick. Wigton then became a bit sloppy and allowed Rotherham back into the game for a second time.

After heavy Rotherham pressure in and around Wigton’s ‘D’, Wigton escaped without conceding a second goal. The defence cleared the ball well, which lead to an excellent counter-attacking move.

Wigton were too fast for Rotherham and after a fantastic run and pass from Jade Jackson, the ball was quickly in the possession of Kath Sherlock, who made no mistake in scoring Wigton’s fourth of the match.

This was a much improved team performance from Wigton, which is extremely important as they are about to play their final three matches, which are potentially the most difficult matches of the season and are must-win games. Good performances are vital to Wigton’s promotion hopes.

Team: Sarah McCall, Sheila Monkhouse, Rebecca Jackson, Laura Raynes, Rebecca Weston, Emma Hill, Lisa Potter, Hazel Robinson, Emma Taggart, Charlotte Davidson, Gayle Laverty, Kath Sherlock, Jade Jackson, Megan Cook.

North CumbriaBadminton League

Although Aspatria lost their final match of the season against Dalston A, they took enough games to ensure they remain in the top flight for another year. After the mixed they were probably surprised themselves to be 4-1 up and could have even won if the top men’s had gone their way, just losing 15-13 in the third end. Debbie Lovatt and Paul Langley were Dalston’s saviours, winning all their games. Aspatria have a chance of revenge this evening, when they play Dalston in the final of the knockout handicap competition at Hallbankgate village hall.

Wigton suffered their fourth 5-4 defeat of the season in a tense game at home to Abbeytown. Despite taking all three three-setters, they were down after the mixed and couldn’t quite recover even though they won both men’s. The Graham twins won all their games for the visitors.

Abbeytown finished off their matches with two games against Border Esk B within four days. After comfortably winning at home, they must have thought they would take runners up spot in the division with another win up at Langholm, but the home team put in a spirited effort to reverse the result in a much closer match.

Abbeytown led 3-2 after the mixed again, but in a complete reversal to what happened at home, they never took another game in the level doubles. The match was probably summed up by the second men’s, where Hamish Currie and Scott Morrison came back from 14-3 down in the third end to lead 16-15, only to eventually lose out to Gavin Rae and Ian Rodger.

In the Men’s league Marchon badminton team have been struggling lately to find enough players to fulfil their fixtures, so their results have been removed in order of fairness to the other teams.

Division 1: Border A 9-0 Aspatria; Aspatria 4-5 Dalston A.

Division 2: Wigton 4-5 Abbeytown; Dalston B 9-0 Brampton; Abbeytown 7-2 Border Esk B; Border Esk B 6-3 Abbeytown.

THE SECOND Anthorn meeting on Saturday produced similar results to the previous one.

Although she failed to claim a ticket at the Wednesday meeting, Ian and Barbara Telford’s senior Trust made no mistake on Saturday, pulling well clear of Denton Memory and Marshman.

In the senior maiden trail Marti Borthwick’s Castle Terras raced home ahead of Wednesday’s winner, Fire Glory with Blaze in third place.

The same three puppies featured in the championship tickets, but this time William and Craig Mark’s Summer Venture reached the tape just ahead of Fire Ranger with his sister, Summer Delight in third place.

Two puppies were clear of the rest in the puppy maiden trail with Kerri and Anna Lindsay’s Farm Time claiming his second win over Templar, owned by Alfie Foster. Edgar Bain’s Gold Finger replaced Delta Lady in third place proving just too strong for Cheeky Girl.

Trust had to work harder for her win on Wednesday as George and Lee Wall’s Denton Memory showed in front on the finish and it was only in the last few yards that she got the better of him. Third was Marti Borthwick’s Castle Thorn, followed by Freedom, Marshman and Amber Salsa.

Willie and Alice Telford’s Fire Glory raced comfortably to her second senior maiden win beating Carol Spark’s recent acquisition, Sparkling Pearl and Alfie Foster’s Blaze. On Line, Blithe Spirit and Molly collected the remaining tickets.

In the open puppy trail David and Craig Mark’s Summer Delight sped in from third place to beat Fire Ranger owned by Willie and Alice Telford with Samantha Newstead and Abbie Lithgow’s Polly in third place. Denton Friendship, Scorpio and Farm Watch were the next three home.

The first four puppies in the puppy maiden trail were the same as Saturday. Farm Time, Templar, Gold Finger and Cheeky Girl with Headline moving up a place and Gold Dust finishing sixth.
