GENEROUS charity runners in Carlisle have collected £1 million for Cancer Research.
The Race for Life event has been running in the city for 10 years and with entrants already lining up to support this 2008 run, the fundraising total has reached a massive £1 million.
But more is needed and organisers are urging more women to sign up for the five-kilometre run in memory of or in support of a cancer sufferer.
Individuals, families and groups of friends or colleagues are being asked to walk, run or jog the course to raise money for the cause.
And the charity is asking them to pass on the invite to friends, family and colleagues now that entries are open for the Carlisle events, supported by the News & Star.
This will be the 11th time Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life has come to the city and this year there will be two Race for Life events in Carlisle, taking place at the Sheepmount stadium on Sunday, July 13, at 11am and 3pm.
Last year more than 4,000 women took part in the event which was held at Bitts Park on July 8.
Nelson Laurencia, area event manager for Race for Life, said: “Last year’s events had an unforgettable atmosphere and we raised an incredible £205,910.
“This year, we are hoping that 4,700 women will sign up to take part in the Carlisle events, helping us to raise a target of £263,000.”
The Carlisle participants will be part of a total of 750,000 women from across the UK, taking part at over 260 events.
Together they will be hoping to raise a total of £50 million to fund vital life-saving research into the prevention, treatment and cure of all types of cancer.
