A PETITION launched to save the Maryport Maritime Museum is attracting international attention.
Nearly 200 people have signed the petition asking Allerdale Borough Council to keep the museum open.
Amongst those who have signed are members of the Titanic Society in Germany who say the Maryport museum contains an essential part of the Titanic history.
Allerdale council has now agreed to keep the museum open until a new group comprising members of the Maryport Festivals Ltd and heritage group has been set up to deal directly with the borough.
Maryport Festivals Limited, which operates from the Shipping Brow building, has indicated it would take over the museum, with the help of volunteers.
You can sign the task group's online petition by filling in the form below and hitting submit.

Have Allerdale Council lost their senses? Preservation and presentation of local heritage is part of their responsibility. What kind of cultural strategy allows for the abandonment of a vital local collection in an historic building at the centre of the much-vaunted harbourside regeneration? The museum is an established attraction providing a unique, authentic visitor experience. The Council should be investing in its economic potential and improving its facilities. I am a Maryportonian in exile and was a pupil of the late, great Annie Robinson who was a founder and champion of the museum. She taught so many of us to be proud of our history.

Have your say
the debate on the titanic seems to be a bone of contention, with places that have a connection with the subject,The root of the trouble is to do with who is in charge, and where can we get the money? And is it worth spending public money,on the things connected with titanic activities, displays etc.My own ideas are that if there is a public response then the signs are that the allerdale council could get involved and facilitate any project such as titanic, and in this case looks worthwhile.
