A statement from Jane Wilson’s family - daughter Sharon, son Lee and her sister Elizabeth Makepeace - says: “The last year has been a difficult one and has caused us to feel that there is no good left in this world.

“To be caught up in a place where lies, deceit and betrayal are all too real. It has been a living nightmare.

“Jane has been in our thoughts every single day.

“She was a wonderful woman, the mother of Sharon and Lee, of whom she was so proud. A devoted daughter and caring sister. We all miss her more than words can say.

“Jane lived life to the full and achieved many of her goals. Her passions was horses and they miss her too.

“She made everyone she met smile and that is how we will always remember her.

“She was an inspiration and there are so many good things to say about her that we don’t know where to stop.

“We all have our own special memories of Jane and no-one can ever take those away from us. Getting justice for Jane will hopefully help restore our faith and understanding in people again.

"Only now can we truly take the first step in getting our lives back on track.

“When surrounded with such evil and immorality it is easy to be consumed with better things and try and forget about a life that was once so full of love and happiness; a life that was stolen from us and a life that represented such integrity and goodness.

“We would like to thank everyone involved in helping to bring justice for Jane.”

Detective chief inspector Paul Duhig said: “This was a devastating attack on an innocent woman carried out by her husband whom she trusted completely.

“Over the last four weeks the court has heard how Wilson spun an elaborate web of lies to cover up a double life which culminated in the callous murder of his wife.

“Wilson’s conviction will ensure that a dangerous man remains in custody for a significant period of time where he can no longer pose a threat to the public.

“Fortunately this type of incident is rare in Cumbria and we have worked closely with Jane Wilson’s family, the Crown Prosecution Service, the prosecution barristers whose expertise and advice have been instrumental in securing the conviction.

“This is the latest in a long line of successful investigations into serious crime that Cumbria Constabulary have undertaken

“The team of detectives and local uniformed police officers worked with great commitment to investigate this incident Wilson’s conviction sends the message that Cumbria Constabulary is dedicated to tackling violent and serious crime.

“Jane Wilson’s family and friends have conducted themselves with great dignity throughout this investigation and prosecution, and we would like to offer our thanks for their support.

“Her children, Lee and Sharon, were instrumental in the outcome at court today as they brought forward key information which helped to re-ignite the police investigation.

“Jane Wilson’s tragic and pointless death has left her two children without a mother and a gaping whole in a large, close-knit family.

“I hope that today’s result will help bring at least some closure to the family and enable them to begin rebuilding their lives.”

Dick Binstead, specialist case work lawyer for CPS Cumbria, said: “As a result of today’s guilty verdict, Robert Wilson has been brought to justice for the callous murder of his wife Jane.

“The prosecution was able to prove beyond doubt to the jury that Wilson was a consummate liar, who had deliberately killed his wife and elaborately covered up her murder, and that his account of a tragic accident could not be believed.

“Through strong circumstantial evidence we have shown how Wilson deceived everyone around him for a long period of time, even secretly leading a double life for over a year, and how this deception extended to the lies that he told about his wife’s death.

“As those who gave evidence at court can testify, he was a very plausible liar and he continued to lie throughout his case in police interviews and here at court, further adding to the grief of Jane Wilson’s family and friends. This has been a traumatic trial for them and my sincere sympathies go to them at this very difficult time.

“Drawing the evidence together and building a strong case that proved Robert Wilson's guilt has involved a great deal of pain-staking work by everyone on the prosecution team and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the investigating officers and prosecution counsel colleagues for their hard work and close cooperation that has helped bring about his conviction."
