Free get fit programme for overweight youngsters

A FREE 10-week programme for overweight children and their families has been set up in Workington and Cockermouth.

MEND – which stands for Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it – was originally launched in Maryport and, following its success there, has expanded. It aims to help overweight children, aged between seven and 13.

Dan Anderton, healthy lifestyle co-ordinator for Carlisle Leisure, which runs the course, said it was run in a relaxed environment and was non-judgemental.

He said: “They learn that exercise can be fun, and the families learn a lot about lifestyles and nutrition that is easy and they realise how much they didn't know.”

The classes involve nutritional advice with healthy eating discussions, behavioural modifications, goal setting and targets, and the kids take part in fun activities involving exercise on dry land and in the pool.

Dan said that MEND encouraged parents or carers to go along and offer support.

For more information about the courses, which will be run at Workington Leisure Centre and Cockermouth Leisure Centre, call Dan on 01228 625625.
