TWO late goals by Dan Chandler earned Crown Newlaithes a point in this entertaining game of football at Down-a-Gate.
The home team had the better of the first half but Crown got stronger to pull back a 2-0 deficit and finish with a creditable draw.
Newlaithes forced an early corner but it was cleared by Will Clarke. Scott Fisher then attempted to find Dan Chandler but Warwick’s Patrick Tidmarsh read the situation perfectly and cleared the ball into the opposition half.
Adam Roberts and David Little were prominent in the Warwick midfield and it was Roberts who cleverly threaded the ball through for Jack Thorpe but the striker was foiled by Benn Atkinson who managed to divert the ball for a corner.
Warwick continued on the attack and Little’s shot was heading for the corner of the goal when Newlaithes goalkeeper Darryll Parkins managed to finger tip the ball onto the post and round for a corner kick.
Warwick took the lead midway through the first half with a move started by Tidmarsh from his own half. The centre half cleared to Roberts who ran half the length of the field before supplying an inch- perfect pass for Thorpe who beat the keeper from close range.
Newlaithes were awarded a free kick but the ball drifted wide of the far post from Fisher’s attempt. The visitors strove to equalise and just before half-time Harry Thompson made progress on the left before losing out to Clarke at the expense of a corner. Fisher’s corner was cleared to Thompson but he shot over the bar and Warwick reached half- time leading by a single goal.
The second half began with Roberts playing the ball to Nick Telford but Parkin was equal to the winger’s shot and he made a comfortable save.
A quick break at the other end saw Warwick goalkeeper Thomas Trickett race out of his goal to clear from the onrushing Chandler. Nick Telford was coming more into the game and he had a shot blocked by Kyle Robinson before supplying the cross for Warwick’s second goal.
Telford beat two men on the left to reach the by-line before sending over a dangerous cross which the Newlaithes defence only partially cleared. The ball came out to Roberts who controlled it before placing an accurate right foot shot shot beyond the reach of Parkin.
At 2-0 up Warwick were in a comfortable position but Newlaithes – driven on by their captain Benn Atkinson – strove even harder and it was Atkinson who drove over a right wing corner to enable Chandler to nip in ahead of the Warwick defenders and make it 2-1.
Newlaithes piled on the pressure and Atkinson came close with a 25-yard free-kick which flashed by the post. There was no denying the visitors and Chandler grabbed his second goal ten minutes from the end to level the scores.
Chandler was hungry for his hat-trick and it almost came, when Trickett failed to hold an Atkinson shot, but the keeper managed to recover the ball ahead of the inrushing Newlathes striker.
The game ended all square which was a fair result as both teams played well and neither deserved to lose.
