Cumbria girls finally kicked off their season with a trip to Crewe, following the postponement of the first fixture.

Girls in four age groups from under-10 to under-16 travelled down to Crewe to get their first experience of playing in a full time fixture programme.

The pre-season training was put to the test against the more established FA Centre of Excellence with all the girls playing an active role in the fixture.

Last season Cumbria were granted for the first time, a licence to run a part-time centre and this season sees the step up to participation in a full-time coaching and fixture programme coming into line with the already established 52 centres across the country.

The Centre Director Ian Batemansaid: “This is a huge chance for Cumbria to compete with the rest of the country and provide girls with the opportunity to be scouted by England.’

The Centre of Excellence provides the girls selected with sport science and psychological support as well as a high quality training and playing environment. Parental workshops are also provided to help support the girls reach their potential.

The county would not be in the position it is in without the hard work and support of the local football clubs and leagues. The Centre will also be providing support to local coaches with training events.

With a new girl’s league in West Cumbria and the Cumbria Women’s League kicking off this season, more and more girls and women are being given the opportunity to play football in the county.
