Yet another set piece slip-up takes the gloss off Workington’s first win

WORKINGTON Reds are on the road to Alfreton tomorrow having secured their first win of the season.
And though Reds manager Darren Edmondson has obviously pleased about Monday’s 4-1 victory over Burscough he is not happy about his side’s frailty at set pieces.
Three-nil up by half-time and with Burscough down to 10 men Reds ended 4-1 winners to move up to 14th in the Blue Square North table.
But Edmondson said: “I told them at half-time I wasn’t over-concerned if they didn’t score again but I just did not want them to give anything away. It was important to keep a clean sheet.
“That’s why, when the lads were on a bit of a high, delighted by the first win, I reminded them of that and said I was disappointed over the Burscough goal.
“We have now conceded six goals from set-pieces with only one so far against us coming from open play.
“I don’t want us to develop a complex over this but clearly we have to tighten up in those areas.”
Jonny Wright (2), Tony Hopper and Anthony Wright scored the goals for Reds who were making amends for a disappointing defeat at Blyth on Saturday.
Edmondson said: “Apart from the goal we gave away I thought we controlled the game virtually from the start and should have won with a bit more in hand.
“There were some good performances and for the most part I thought we played some decent football.
“I was forced into some changes and made others but generally I thought they all worked out well.
“I hope this will kick-start our season but there will be much tougher challenges ahead.
“This should have given us a boost, though, and we need to follow up and get something in two away games on Saturday and Monday.”
Kyle May limped off 10 minutes from time with an ankle injury but he now has two weeks in which to recover as he starts a three-match suspension with the Alfreton game.
Reds are away on Monday evening at Droylsden.
