New feature: Runners will be able to pin up signs and messages about people they are taking part for

A Reflection Zone will be set up at the Sheepmount Stadium in Carlisle on Sunday, where the 4,000 participants can hang commemorative signs and messages.

Event manager Nelson Laurencia said: “There will be a dedicated area set up at the exit. This is the first time we have had one in Carlisle and it will be used for people to display the signs that they run with on their backs.

“It is going to be really emotional. We could end up with more than 4,000 personal messages.

“It really brings home the reasons that people take part in the race and just how many people have been affected by cancer.”

Traffic measures will be in place in Carlisle for Sunday’s event which will feature two 5k races – one at 11am and another at 3pm.

Dacre Road and Devonshire Walk will be closed from 7am until 5pm, only allowing access for disabled badge holders.

Due to a lack of parking, fundraisers are being urged to park outside the area and walk to the Sheepmount Stadium. Organisers are also asking people to arrive at the stadium one hour before the race times.

Nelson added: “People think that the events start at 11am and 3pm but this is when the race kicks off.

“So I would advise people to be on site for 10am or 10.15am for the morning race. The warm up is held 30 minutes before the start of the race and that is part of the fun of the experience.”

Lookaround presenters Kate Fisher, Jennifer Humphreys and Helen Pearson will start the race at 11am.

Nelson added: “I would urge people to remember to bring bottled water with them for the race and safety pins.

“These are really important for pinning signs and running numbers on to T-shirts.”

There will be catering facilities on site and unwanted clothes, books, CDs and DVDs can be donated on the day.

You can sign up to take part in the race until midnight tonight.
