Still time to race for life in city

THERE’S just one week to go before the whistle blows for this year’s Race for Life – but it’s not too late to sign up.

Carlisle is hosting a morning and afternoon race at the Sheepmount Stadium and although 3,600 entrants have registered so far there are still some places left.

The women-only event raises money for Cancer Research UK and last year Carlisle runners brought in more than £260,000.

The charity hopes to do even better on Sunday and the good news is you don’t have to be super-fit to join in because you can run, jog or walk the 5km course.

There are no prizes for coming first, just credit for taking part, and about half of all involved choose to stroll rather than sprint.

Carlisle organiser Nelson Laurencia said: “We hope to have a real party atmosphere on the day. The event is always a fantastic experience, with local women coming together to make a positive difference to the lives of people touched by cancer.

“I hope everyone enjoys the day but I also hope they realise what a fantastic and vital contribution their fundraising will make to the work that our scientists, doctors and nurses are doing.”

Nelson is also asking for unwanted clothes, books, CDs and DVDs to be taken to the charity’s Donation Station.

He added: “You could easily add an extra £30 to whatever sponsorship you raise.”

The races start at 11am and 3pm. Entrants need to arrive at least an hour in advance so they join in the warm-up exercises.

Runners are advised to either car share or use public transport to ease congestion. There will be no parking at the stadium itself.

Carlisle Race for Life closes for entries at midnight tomorrow. Visit www.raceforlife.org
