James Wright will be back in Workington colours on Saturday night when he stands in for number one Daniel Nermark.
The Comets top rider is on duty in Poland on Sunday riding in a Grand Prix qualifying meeting.
Nermark will also hear later this week whether he has been chosen for the Swedish W9orld Team Cup squad.
Comets team manager Ian Thomas said: “Normally Daniel would have been able to dash off after our Saturday meeting and still have time to get to Poland for an afternoon or evening meeting.
“But for this Grand Prix qualifier he has to be there for practice which starts at 9-30am.
“Practice is mandatory and there can be no excuses so he has to be there for that.
“We are fortunate in that we have a ready-made guest in James who is now operating at reserve in the Elite League for Swindon Robins.
“We haven’t a good record against Birmingham so we really do want to put one over on them on Saturday.”
Before then the two teams meet at Perry Barr on Wednesday night when Workington hope to track a seven-man team for the first time in weeks.
Joe Haines will test his damaged arm at practice today and if he comes through unscathed will ride tomorrow against the Brummies.
Birmingham have their own injury problems with Adam Roynon and Phil Morris currently sidelined. Under the circumstances they did well to hold Reading Racers to a 48-42 scoreline last night.
Thomas said: “They had Krzysztof Stojanowski and Paul Clews in as guests at Reading and they scored 11 and 9 respectively which was practically half the team score.
“I don’t know who is guesting for them tonight on the Isle of Wight or against us on Wednesday but when they visit Derwent Park on Saturday they have booked Edinburgh’s Andrew Tully and Lee Smethills.”
Workington and Birmingham have been drawn apart in the Premier League Best Pairs which is staged on the eve of the British Grand Prix at Cardiff.
