Stobart workers gear up for run

A STRIKING Eddie Stobart convoy is revving up and preparing to motor through Carlisle’s Race For Life.
But it will not be of the type usually associated with the Cumbrian haulage giant.
It will be a convoy of 40 women Stobart workers on a journey to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK at the Sheepmount Stadium on July 13.
They have been inspired to take part after hearing of the bravery of those who have undergone treatment for cancer.
Customer service worker Sophie Baxter, Julia Bell, who works in the firm’s accounts department, and former colleague Amanda Kirtley have been rallying eager colleagues to take part.
Sophie, 20, of Dalston, said: “Myself and Julia have done the Race for Life for a number of years. I have had a few members of my family who have died of cancer. Julia has had people pass away from cancer too.
“In the past we have asked for money from colleagues, family and friends and a lot of people said they would do it next year.
“It has really taken off. We have about 40 members of staff doing it and the company has paid for us to get T-shirts done. The response we have had has been excellent.”
And the women are taking their training seriously – even enlisting the help of a colleague who works as a personal trainer.
Sophie said: “We want to do this because it will make such a big difference. If you raise more money it could help the prevent the situations we have gone through in life.”
Race for Life organisers hope to see up to 3,500 women taking part in this year’s event with a fundraising target of £191,000.
The 5km course will take women around the Sheepmount and surrounding area.
