Windfarm developer is offering £375,000

A COMMUNITY has been told that it is in line for a £375,000 windfall if a windfarm which developers want to site on its doorstep, gets the go-ahead.
Bolsterstone Plc says it will submit a planning application in June to put up three wind turbines at Cumwhinton.
If Carlisle City Council grants permission, a community fund would be set up – giving £15,000 a year for its 25-year lifespan.
This would provide £375,000, which would be managed by the local council. It could be spent on improving local facilities or energy efficiency in the community, or be put towards educational projects.
Newlands Wind Farm is planned for land between Newlands and Cringles, just north of the B6263 to Wetheral and east of the M6 off Junction 42. It could start generating electricity in 2010.
An exhibition will be held in the village near Carlisle, showing Bolsterstone’s plans.
Visitors will be able to make their views known on feedback forms. Those who cannot attend can see the plans and complete a questionnaire online at www.newlandswindfarm.co.uk.
Director of Bolsterstone Mike Corker said: “The exhibitions will give the local community the opportunity to come and see the threats we are facing from climate change and how a windfarm in the area could help.
“We will be there to answer people’s questions. We are keen to get as much feedback as possible.”
The drop-in exhibitions will be held at Cumwhinton Village Hall next Friday from 3pm until 7pm and next Saturday, from 10am until 2pm.
Bolsterstone is offering an energy-saving light bulb to each household to demonstrate ways to help conserve energy.
Visitors will also be able to buy Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth DVD at a reduced price, and choose a local charity to receive the proceeds.
The company says it has chosen the location because it is sparsely populated nd not in a designated protected area. It is close to a grid connection, with a good wind speed and no aviation or communications links issues.
It says the wind farm would provide employment opportunities in the area and the renewable energy industry in general, which it is estimated will provide up to 35,000 jobs nationally by 2020.

Man-made climate change is the greatest global threat that we face today.
Not to take action to address it or to actively oppose measures intended to tackle climate change are highly irresponsible and short sighted.
The UK has 40% of the European wind resource, wind power must and will play a key role in our energy mix - Yes to Wind !!!

@ Jonathan. Get a grip; wind power is a hugely overated 'resource' driven by developer greed and will not, now listen carefully to this bit, NOT shut down one traditional power generation station.
