Emotional night for Gretna’s Skelton

GAVIN SKELTON admits his final game for Gretna tonight will be an emotional moment.

Skelton, who joined Gretna in their UniBond League days in 2002 and was part of their three successive championships, will pull on a Borderers’ shirt for the final time when they face Hearts at Motherwell’s Fir Park in what could be the stricken club’s last-ever game.

The 27-year-old Cumbrian is set to leave at the end of the season, with Kilmarnock, St Mirren, Morton and Aberdeen all chasing his signature.

But while Skelton is certain to be in demand, Gretna’s future is still up in the air as time is running out to find a new owner with the club facing a possible winding up order on Saturday.

Administrators Wilson Field, who are running the crisis club, have set a Saturday deadline for any takeover bid, but none of the four interested buyers have yet made a move.

Skelton said: “Once the season is over and I sit down and reflect on things, it might sink in.

“Everything has moved very quickly in the last couple of months so it's been hard to digest it all. I've tried to concentrate on playing but you're always hearing rumours or reading things in the paper.

“I don't know what will happen and time is obviously running out but I hope it's positive news and not the end. A lot of hard work has gone in to get us where we are today so it would be a shame to see it all go to waste.

“I'm very lucky because the club has achieved more in the last five years than most do in 50 and it's been amazing to have played a part in it. People say enjoy the good times because they don't last and that is certainly true.”

Gretna fans' chief Craig Williamson is predicting tearful scenes at the end of tonight’s game.

Williamson, chairman of the Gretna Supporters' Society, insists he still remains positive the club will be saved but admits emotions will run high among loyal fans.

He said: “It will be a sad occasion, I'm sure some of the more emotional fans will have a tear in their eyes.

“You always have that feeling it is going to be the last time you are ever going to see Gretna.

“It is obviously going to be their last game in the SPL but it will be a really sad occasion if this is the last ever game that Gretna Football Club play.”

Creditors are owed £4million by Gretna, who were plunged into crisis by the illness and subsequent withdrawal of funds of millionaire backer Brooks Mileson.
