WHITEHAVEN experienced the shortest celebration party in history after their 2-1 Wearside League win over bottom side Silksworth Community.

Waiting anxiously for news on how Jarrow, their rivals for the runner-up spot, had got on they were initially told they had lost 4-1 to Ryhope.

That would have been good enough to clinch second spot and promote the west Cumbrians to the Northern League.

Joint manager Kenny Wallace said: “Everybody was delighted and starting to party when we were told there had been a mistake and that Jarrow had won 4-1. It was so deflating.

“They are two points behind us but have one more game left at Annfield Plain on Wednesday and if they win there will obviously finish above us. We can only hope now they slip-up by losing or only getting a draw.”

Whitehaven nearly blew it themselves against a Silksworth side who have finished bottom of the League.

The Amateurs got off to a flying start with a goal on four minutes from Michael Farrer but the goal-rush did not materialise.

Midway through the first-half Silksworth equalised through Shaun Smith and Whitehaven struggled to break through again.

The winner came four minutes from the end when substitute Craig Robson found the net to spare his team-mate’s blushes.
