‘I’d like to come back’ - Cassidy

FORMER Workington Reds boss Tommy Cassidy would be interested in getting his old job back.
But Reds chairman Humphrey Dobie is happy to give Darren Edmondson more time in the hot seat after a “successful season”.
Cassidy, who left Reds for Newcastle Blue Star in September, has previously admitted that he made a mistake leaving Borough Park.
And he told Times & Star Sport yesterday that he would relish the opportunity to take over from Darren Edmondson should the position become available.
He said: “I have to be honest and say I made a mistake in leaving. I lost a bit of pride by what has happened since I left and I want to get it back.
“I had six fantastic seasons with Workington and I left because of the distance. People can think it was for the money but that was not the case.
“It was a two hour drive and when the opportunity came along to work five minutes down the road for a team that was telling me how ambitious they were I took it.
“Let me tell you, the grass is not always greener on the other side. I know that now. I was promised the world by Blue Star but it never materialised, they never kept to the script. Workington are a football club and Blue Star are not.
“I left Workington on good terms with everyone and I still look out for their results. I want them to do well.”
Darren Edmondson, who took over from the former Northern Ireland international, guided Reds to 14th in Blue Square North this season and a trip to League Two side Bury in the first round of the FA Cup.
Dobie said: “We have a manager and I am happy with him. Darren is contracted until the end of next season and I don’t see him walking away from the job.
“We have had a successful season despite all the upheaval caused by Tommy leaving. We have had our best FA Cup run in many years as well as our second best FA Trophy run.
“I am still friends with Tommy and I wish him well, but at the moment I am happy with what Darren Edmondson is trying to do here, and we will continue to support him.”
Cassidy said he wants to get back into football but does not want to step on the current managers toes.
He said: “I have a lot of time for Darren. He was the model pro when I was in charge and he has done well in his first six months with a great squad that I left him.
“I don’t want to step on his toes but I want to get back into football.
“I have had eight weeks of watching the Champions League and Coronation Street on the telly and it is doing my head in. I really miss football, it has been my life and I have had one or two enquiries but nothing concrete.”
Cassidy has been taking coaching tips from his friend Kevin Keegan and will attend a charity quiz at St James’ Park tonight in aid of Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given’s cancer charity.
